I have tested these programs with their default settings and then, where necessary, experimented with the sharpening and noise reduction to see if that makes a difference. There are many more profiles to choose from to, both for black and white and color, and they can give you great results straight out of the box.
You can use the Auto button to apply auto corrections too, and the transformations can be dramatic, though for my taste they often make images look over-light and over-saturated. I have used DXO off and on for years, and will be upgrading to the newest version, but in spite of many comparisons over the years, I still have C1 as my main raw processor as on balance it seems to more consistently allows “me” to get the quality I’m happy with.
I am a personal [hobbyist] photographer, couldn’t care less for tethering. That kind of “convenient feature” has as many negative aspects as it does positive ones. Really, as a mobile “off-road” photographer who shoots raw that’s a pun as opposed to scripted professional shoots I am OK with not being plugged into the grid.
What I am after is image processing and final output that brings out the best possible proof as printed on my Canon Pixma ProS. Up until now I have been quite happy, but it’s like until you see an improvement in quality it is then that you realize what you have been working on previous up until that point is actually lackluster.
What I notice with this newest version of DXO is it is definitely speedier and it seems at least one the one image I used, to be less “surreal” in appearance and actual more natural than Capture One. Ah, OK I misunderstood your reference to adverts asking for C1 experience as meaning you were looking for a career in professional photography, and tethering is an important reason for why C1 is popular.
I think the image quality argument between raw processors is nearly always going to be subtle and you just need go for the software that works for you, and learn to get the most out of whatever you have.
Don’t get me wrong, I have worked in industry before, but have always brought my personal unique ability to the table. Of course, I am adaptable and willing to work within a set established streamline, but prefer to shoot on the road as opposed to in-house.
Beggars can’t be choosers, but yes image rendition quality is paramount when choosing software in lieu of any features for convenience of workflow. After another hour on DXO PhotoLab I am starting to notice some inconsistencies and it is definitely coming weak in some areas compared to C1. For one, local colour correction is limited to changing saturation levels and white balance, but I haven’t seen the option to change hue, like you can in Viveza RGB values or C1.
This will probably hopefully be introduced in some future update or version. I’d also like things like moire-removal to be available locally in DxO PhotoLab, because the global correction does its job well in the problem areas but desaturates small but important colourful details in a photo e. Another omission: this new version still keeps the old Exporting formula, where if you want to export for web, you have to decide if you want to downsize with plain Bicubic which leads to softening or the default Bicubic Sharper which is too strong.
I hope that in the future they’ll include some of the Nik Output Sharpener’s tech. I’m in the same situation as you. DxO OpticsPro was good but never convinced me in the end. Why you say there is only 4 days to take the introductory offer? When does it expire? This is true. I found this comparing LR to Capture. Only real difference is LR offers Low, Standard and High for export sharpening while Capture lets you fine tune the amount.
I think, many professionals don’t have that luxury, and that image rendition is about being “fit for purpose” rather than the best it possibly can be. Well, I have always ended up coming back to C1 in the end, but I will still no doubt update to this latest version of DXO, but at the moment I have ended up using it for only one thing: Prime Noise reduction with high ISO Nikon 1 files. Just as an aside, I have just been impressed with the results of Topaz Detail, but by using the result from Topaz as an example, I found that with more careful use of clarity, structure, sharpness and detail in C1, I seemed able to get, for my purposes, identical results.
Actually, I ended up preferring the C1 result. It just keeps reminding me that “my” quality issues are really all about skill development, and not very much about the software I’m using. Even more torn than ever now, they’re both outstanding in their own right. Not used the latest version, but I ended up buying C1 and DXO after testing, and hardly ever use DXO as in practice I just always ended up preferring the quality of the C1 images, and you can do a lot tweeks with C1.
I’m embarrassed to say after all the griping I caved. Like I said perhaps in other threads it took a year to warm up to LR and another few to fine tune and get it the way I wanted it. I did a bunch more tests with Capture and frankly there was just no knock your socks off difference for me. I read on another thread what happens if they go full subscription. They are already offering it. LR classic install was seamless, took less than 5 minutes to open and picked up my old catalogue, presets and defaults.
Same for my laptop. I’ll give a year and see. It is like nothing changed expect for Adobe’s meat hooks but now I get Dehaze which is very nice. I do have the 3rd party one on LR6. Have not explored the other new things yet. I’m working on my desktop and external drives and I have not even seen the word cloud.
