What I do know is that my parents who are over privacy conscience are very skeptical about their info “possibly” being kept in the Cloud. Is this possible? Yes, they just need to be sure that OneNote is NOT being defauted yo the cloud to be shared with others. Make sure that the default location is to thier local “User” folder. When your Mother is prompted to sign in, click on the option to create a new account.
Then click the X in the upper right corner to close that window. Then you should be in OneNote and shouldn’t get the prompt again to sign in or create an account.

I bought a surface book today. One of the nice features is the pen. Click it, it opens one note immediately, use onenote 2013 without microsoft account free you can jot down notes and such. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find how to open it without a Microsoft account Which I do not want, nor would I even be allowed to use in my work environment, nor do I care if my random musings go to the cloud.
When you go to open onenote, the first And only thing it does is ask you to sign in with your microsoft account. How can I use onenote without having a microsoft account? Or Cortana, for that matter. It’s actively turning me off this dollar product I just bought. You just listed two products of theirs that are specifically cloud products. It’s not surprising they want you to sign in for them to function. Either sign up for a Microsoft account, or don’t use those apps.
A Microsoft account is the base you need to access many services. Are you seriously surprised by this? These services are intrinsically tied with cloud computing I mean, for fuck’s sake, OneDrive is in and of itself Cloud Storage – how do you figure you don’t need an account. Are you asking about One Drive or One Note? If the latter, then which version? If you are using the free version then yes, you do need a Microsoft account – much like Evernote or other note apps require accounts.

While you don’t need to sign into Windows with a Microsoft account, you absolutely need an MS account to use cloud products such as OneDrive and Cortana. If you meant One Noteas in the built-in OneNote app, you also need to sign into it with a Microsoft account. It’s a paired down version designed to work with the cloud only. You will need to install a desktop version of Office you bought if you want local noteooks.

Yes, technically it can run on desktops, but it’s designed first and foremost for touch. The full version of OneNote only comes with Office and is designed with keyboard, mouse, pen and touch in mind. The free version of OneNote requires a Microsoft Account as already notedthe version that comes with Office does not.
It’s free for a reason, and that reason is to push MS services. There’s a free version of desktop OneNote. The download page of course pushes the Store version but click “Windows Desktop” on that page to get the desktop version. I don’t know its limits as I’ve always had OneNote as part of Office.

Microsoft themselves recommend not using the 64 bit office unless you require some specific feature. It all depends on your environment. My company apparently started deploying Office bit the moment it was available.
