AS a result of my total confusion I bought 16 cores of Standard. For an additional Windows Server VM’s, you license the hardware again with cores being the minimum.
I understand the confusion but Microsoft reps here and in other venues have confirmed that’s how it is as do the online licensing calculators many people make use of. For Windows Server the core 2-processor pack is the minimum unit of licensing. If your hardware has less than that you still need to purchase one of those pack each time you want to “fully license” your hardware. You currently have the right to run two instances of Windows Server only.
Note I said instances and not VMs, because if you run any load on the base install other than Hyper-V it counts as an instance. Selfstudy is an IT service provider. The bottom line is all cores must be licensed on a host even if they are not being used for a Windows Os. That means all cores must be licensed double for each set of two guests. The initial 16 core purchase comes with the license to run the 2 OSes.
In addition, previous versions of Windows were good for 2 physical processors, even if you only had one. You currently have the right to run instances of Windows Server only. And there is the confusion once again. We’re not talking running Hyper-V but in fact we are talking about running Windows Standard edition with then Hyper-V role.
Under that Hyper-V role if I run two Linux servers and 2 windows servers so 4 VMs how many cores on an 8 core server do I actually need. Microsoft specifically says you are entitled to run “2 OSE Operating Systme Environments ” and I believe Linux is an operating system so they should count towards the total should they not? Only if that physical machine with the hyper-v role is being used for something other than hyper-v. If you install the role and then use that Server instance for nothing but management of the VMs, you don’t need a license for it.
Hyper-V is free even when used as a role. As soon as you add any other roles, though, or use that Server for anything other than management, you do need that additional core pack.
Linux servers have nothing to do with Windows Server licensing. It’s got it’s own weird licensing :. Thanks everyone for the quick responses and discussion. Now I understand wouldn’t it be nice if Microsoft used unambiguous language? I got lucky on this one. I did the math based on physical core and 4 vms and got it wrong but as it turns out with Linux not counting towards VM counts I accidentally got it right.
