Power cuts : Blackout duration to reduce by end Sept.

A reduction in daily power cuts is expected by the end of September with the addition of power from a generation unit which will complete its maintenance cycle at the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant.

According to the Ministry of Energy Secretary M.P.D.U.K. Mapa Pathirana, two of the Norochcholai Plant’s generation units will be reconnected to the national grid by the end of the month.

“Once the generation units of the Norochcholai Power Plant are repaired and reconnected, we will be gradually reducing the duration of power cuts. Within the course of this month, one unit will be added to the national grid and the other one will be added by the end of the month,” Pathirana explained.

He added that there was sufficient furnace oil available for power generation in thermal power plants, due to the Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery being operational following the arrival of two crude oil shipments last month.
